Rachel Biddulph
Rachel Biddulph is a landscape painter working from her studio in Mumbles. Her work emerges from a profound emotional response to the coastline, particularly the Gower Peninsula, and an enduring fascination with weather. She draws inspiration from the dramatic events that transpire in the skies and on the sea: the abrupt darkness preceding a storm, the shifting nature of light before, during, and after rainfall, distant squalls traversing open water, and the ephemeral shafts of light that pierce through dense clouds, capturing the water’s surface with an almost supernatural intensity. Rachel’s primary focus lies not in faithfully depicting literal scenes but rather in capturing the atmosphere—a sense of place and moment—through these transient shifts in weather and light. By exploring the connection between external landscapes and inner states of being, she seeks to convey a deeper understanding of the human experience. Working prominently in oil, her paintings are textured and her process is energetic and intuitive, responding to the physicality of paint, its surprises and possibilities—the unpredictability echoing the nature of the weather and coastline itself.
